Each week we are posting General Intercessions for the upcoming Sunday liturgies by Msgr. Joseph Masiello, retired pastor of Holy Trinity Parish, Westfield, NJ.  These intercessions are based on the assigned scriptures, the liturgical season and current events.

TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

CELEBRANT: We turn to our God with humility, the God who makes a home for the poor, and, with confidence, we pray through Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant.

READER: Please respond, “LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER!”

1.  That Church leaders may shepherd God’s people with humility, following the example of the Good Shepherd, and gently lead them to embrace joyfully the option for the poor and the hurting, we pray...

2.  That hearts may be transformed so that the trumpets of war and the din of violence may be silenced, and new pathways opened for peace, especially where there is no peace, we pray...

3.  That wealthy nations may not exalt themselves through military and economic power, but rather humble themselves to provide for the poor, the hungry, and the planet, the common home of all, we pray...

4.  That God may grant success to the hands of all those seeking to restore the so many devastated by flood and fire in our land, we pray...

5.  That our humble welcome of all to the Lord’s Table may enrich the diversity of our community, challenge our society to open hearts and homes to the poor and the lowly, and reflect the joy of the heavenly banquet, we pray...

6.  That the seriously ill in our community and among our family members and friends may be gifted with the comfort of loved ones and the healing touch of our God, (especially __________,) we pray...

7.  That the sorrowing may be lifted up in hope by Easter’s glorious promise; and _____________, (and) all our beloved dead rest in the forever embrace of God’s love and peace, we pray...

8.  We pause to express, in the silence of our hearts, our personal intentions.

                                    (PAUSE)

That God may listen with a special kindness to those unspoken concerns, we pray...

CELEBRANT:  O God, defender of orphans and of widows, we, your people, cry out to you on behalf of all in need.  Attend to our prayer, and bring us one day into your kingdom, a kingdom where there will be no more war or injustice, no more poverty or pain, no more weeping or sorrow.  We ask this through Christ our Lord.
