Dominican Preachers of Long Island

Fr. Ron Henery, OPFr. Robert Vaughn, OPFr. Robert Vaughn and Fr. Ron Henery are the core members of the Dominican Preachers of Long Island.  In keeping with the Dominican spirit of collaboration, Dominican women-religious minister as associate members with them on a part-time basis.  They are a team of Dominican preachers committed to the ministry of preaching in the tradition of their founder, Saint Dominic.  Having experienced the call to serve God's people, they minister to create an environment for human and spiritual development.

They see in our world a need for prayer and contemplation, for renewed faith and hope, for healing and compassion, for peace and justice. They desire to share in the struggle and journey of women and men who seek their life-meaning in the lived-experience of God's love. So, they welcome the opportunity to assist you in your efforts to provide for the spiritual and pastoral needs of the people you serve.

Programs:

This parish retreat is designed to enable a parish community to deepen the experience of God's love and friendship and to foster evangelization within the larger community. It gives the parish the opportunity to be affirmed, encouraged, and challenged. It is a time to ask questions, to begin new directions in a prayerful atmosphere where people can reflect more deeply about life, about God, and about themselves. The Dominican Team introduces the retreat at all the weekend Masses and invites everyone to participate. The parish community gathers to celebrate the power of God's Word in our lives. A service emphasizing a particular Scripture-oriented theme is presented each morning and evening, Monday through Thursday. The opportunity for the Sacrament of reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, and other special needs can be arranged with the team. Retreats are either preached or directed, for a week or a weekend, as a team or individually, in parishes, motherhouses, religious communities, health-care facilities, or schools, for the elderly, a community, faculty or staff. They offer special programs for Advent and Lent, Days of Prayer, spiritual direction, pastoral counseling, novenas and Triduum services.

Availability:

They usually schedule a parish retreat one year in advance. The minimum length of time needed for adequate preparation and planning is at least six months.

Fee:

You may receive information about fees upon request.

Sr. Francine Barber, OPAs a member of the Order of Preachers, I treasure opportunities to exercise the Charism of pulpit preaching.  I have a Masters of Pastoral Arts with an emphasis in Religious Formation which I received in 1982 from Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri.  While there I had courses in homiletics and over the years attended workshops on preaching, including one from Fr. Jude Siciliano, OP.

I was director of Formation for My congregation of Edmonds Dominicans for 6 years after graduation from Aquinas.  Following that was a 6 year stint as Associate Director of Lay Formation in the Diocese of Covington, KY.  During that time I taught homiletics to both lay minister candidates and deacon formation candidates.

Upon returning to Seattle I was on the staff at St. John the Evangelist in Seattle, where I was on a preaching cycle of once a month or every 6 weeks for the Sunday Masses.

After a stint on the last Edmonds Dominican General Council before their merger with the Adrian Dominicans, I was Director of Lifelong Catechesis for the Diocese of Pueblo, Colorado.  In my four years there I taught homiletics to two sets of Deacon Formation candidates.

Once again I am back in Seattle where I had the opportunity to preach at 5 different parishes for the Washington State Catholic Conference and for Catholic Charities.  I also preached at the funeral of one of our Sisters this year.

Since I am “quasi retired” my schedule is fairly open, and I would be available to preach or give retreats in the greater Seattle area.  I have also done spiritual direction at various times in my career.

    Blessings,
